Help and advice to home-owners

The electrical installation of a property is one of the most   overlooked parts of the home, mainly because much of it is hidden and very often carries on working despite many serious faults that can cause electric shock and fires.

Check your own installation; look out for:

  • Old rubber insulated cables, (often black coloured) or even older lead sheathed cables.
  • An old fuse board without circuit breakers, (MCB's) and RCD's, (residual current devices).
  • Green and yellow cables which should go to your water main and gas main.
  • Old socket outlets with brown overheating marks around the plug pin inserts.
  • Light switches that don't work properly: causing lights to flicker.
  • Unsupported cables hanging down walls, etc.

The hidden parts that can only be checked by an electrician:

  • The presence of an 'earth' on all circuits.
  • Overloaded cables without correct overcurrent protection, (very often the cause of a fire).
  • Damaged insulation to cables.
  • Adequate earthing to metalwork, etc.
