Free electricity from the sun is now an option which many people are considering given the frequent rises in energy costs. But what is it and what are the real benefits?
Firstly, modern solar panels absorb sunlight and in this system convert this energy directly into electricity, (unlike solar thermal systems which heat a tank of water).
The electricity produced is metered and either used by the premises or fed back into the National Grid via a two-way meter.
So if you are using electricity during daylight hours the generated electricity will off-set this consumption and any excess produced will be ‘sold’ back to your supply company.
If you are not in during daylight hours all the generated electricity will be ‘sold’ to the supply company.
These are called ‘feed in tariffs’.
The Government have recently, (December 2011) rescinded on their commitment to the Solar Photovoltaic industry. Consequently the feed in tariffs have been drastically reduced from 43p per unit generated to just 21p.
